Interviews - Krusafix

Krusafix - Darrel Hughes - Interviewed by Tracy Cooper.

Formed in England just over a year ago, Krusafix has made a very fast impact on various alternative electronic music scenes world-wide.

In just twelve months Krusafix has released one remix album, one single, one studio album, followed by another remix album, and a special edition remix album. With such a prolific musical output I thought it was time to delve deeper into the world of Krusafix, and see what made this fast rising star burn so bright!.

TC: Why were the release dates of the albums Infernal Sky (30th April), Temptation (28th May), Ascent (25th June) so close together?.

K: I just wanted them to flow together like that, as I have plans to move on to other new works very soon!.

TC: Why did you make a remix album (Temptation), and special edition remix album (Ascent), of Infernal Sky?.

K: I wanted to break away from just doing an album followed by singles, which only have a few new tracks or remixes, etc.

I wanted to build something bigger. I felt it was much more interesting to create a complete remix album featuring every track from Infernal Sky. The tracks are more like singles in a way, because there are no fillers or deadbeat tracks as is normally found on albums. So, it made sense to push all the tracks forward into other interpretations.

With Ascent the idea was to make even further permutation and have them released as a limited edition remix album. However, I later found that it would be too restrictive just to have a short production run of this release, therefore, I decided to call it a special edition remix album, etc.

TC: How have your fans reacted to this?.

K: In general it was a very positive reaction. It just took me longer to write and record it all. In the end, it’s more of a complete work, fully formed and fleshed out.

TC: How do you feel your music has progressed since the release of Cyber Angel?.

K: I’d say it’s got darker, more intense overall.

TC: What inspires the theme’s for the titles of your tracks?.

K: The track titles I derive from the subject matter of each track. I like to dig very deep, so to come up with something quite interesting and fresh. I don’t like the easy way out, and giving things obvious titles which lack imagination.

TC: Why did you decided to use a female vocalist in the track Trinity - Red Pill Mix on Infernal Sky?. Would you use a female vocalist again?.

K: I thought Anja Neodolas has a great voice, and it worked very well for that track. If I think a proposed new track requires a female vocal then I would do something with a female vocalist again.

TC: When using the samples in your tracks, do you plan to music around the sample or visa versa?.

K: I acquire the samples I need first, with a specific theme in mind. The music is crafted to embrace the samples where needed.

However, in terms of composing I would say they are conceived together.

TC: Do you intend to record three consecutive albums again?, or try a different approach?.

K: For the sake of keeping it interesting, I will make a different approach with the next releases.

TC: Have you any ideas for your next cd yet?, and will it too have religious or satanic elements to it?.

K: Yes, I have a lot of new ideas formulating at the moment. As for the music, you will have to wait an see!.

TC: What sort of fans do you attract with your music?.

K: I’d say it’s people from the darker side of electronic music. Although, people from the hard electronic dance scenes are into it too. Being a new act, I’m in a situation where the more adventurous alternative electronic fans will discover me first I think. Sub commercial dance fans, industrial, gothic, techno fans all find something in the sound of Krusafix that interests them.

TC: You have a unique sound to your music, do you feel you have created a new genre of electronic music with Krusafix?.

K: In the beginning the whole idea was to do just that. Now looking back, I can say I have achieved that. It’s now time to explore new realms, to keep pushing it into the unknown.

TC: What made you decide to choose the titles for your albums?.

K: Each album title reflects the front artwork images of the cd cases.

TC: What are you hoping to reflect with the artwork on each album?. Do they have any connection with the music on the cd’s or was there another idea behind it all?.

K: I wanted to convey the overall mood of each album via the artwork. They give a good insight to the psyche behind the music.

TC: What can we expect to see from Krusafix in the near future?.

K: There should be a new release out after the summer.
